How does a stump fire "grow out of control" seriously?

To quote one of my favourite movies:

The woods around here are bone dry this year. The forests in Oregon are full of underbrush, slash and blowdowns. You can't walk through them in most places. The area where the fire was is also pretty rugged. I've hunted around there. It don't take much for a fire to get going with all the dry tender on the ground.

The worst fire in the last century was the Tillamook Burn back in the thirties. Burnt several hundred thousand acres. It was caused by a cable rubbing against a stump as they were hauling logs up a slope to a landing.

We were lucky they got this one under controll with only several hundred acres burnt.

I've been up to Tillamook, that's real pretty country up there nowadays.
