I'm watching Wizard of Oz & trying to tell what kind of surplus rifles the Wiz's guards have. They look like real deal military rifles & bayonets. Doc? Mario? SW

Haven't seen that one in a while. Google turned this up:

Image

Has me thinking Springfield trapdoor conversion with the arced loop off-set hammer....

Most of what I can find on-line is really blurry...

We saw that rifle on display many years ago now, along with many other props and costumes of W.o.OZ, at Walt Disney World's Movie Studio after they bought Wizard of Oz movie and rights. The rifle they had labeled as being the rifle of the Emerald Citiy was a pot metal cast with a slightly belled muzzle with the bayonet being a part of the cast. The stock was painted. Looked so ridiculous I'm betting they put the flowers in the muzzle to hide the bell.

EDIT Looked at an old VHS tape of the movie and it looks like the straw man also had a gun, he was carrying a revolver(? some kind of pistol any way) in to the scary woods while the tin man had his ax and a giant pipe wrench. The pistol was gone by the time the tin man was dropped by what ever picked him up.

At first I thought the Munchkins had Carcanos, but looking closer, they were clearly toys.

I *think* Bannermans was still in biz when this movie was made so I was looking for an old rifle of some sort. SW

I spent a bit of time looking at the tin-man's pistol on Saturday. Definitely a mock-up with the barrel sitting over and above the cylinder. A google search of Wizard of Oz guards turned that one up...
