Found a group on FB for the USS Aspro SSN648, my first submarine command. Reconnected with a former shipmate and I just had to get out the old album for a West-Pac cruise in '82-'83. If I wasn't the shy guy I was I would have been a real stud. :rotflma:

I had never heard of the Aspro. Sounds like a joke, but I found it is a fish found in the Rhone River basin in France. Someone must have searched long and hard to find that name.

Before the Los Angles class fast boats were named after fish. USS Aspro SSN 648 was the second submarine to be named Aspro. The SS 309 had 2 commisionings, first was '43-'46 then again '51-'53. Ballistic missile subs back in my day were named after historical figures. Ohio Class was just getting going before I got out.

Fr8dude,

Is the top photo a negative or an infrared pic?

Yes, I remembered huge numbers of WW2 US subs names after fish, but I was surprised they went overboard to find the name Aspro. It's sort of like Bass Pro without the B.

Three or four months ago I found the "Silent Service" tv series on Youtube. I remember watching it when much younger. There were quiet a few actors in it who went to public fame. Leonard Nimoy, De Forest Kelley, Chuck Connors. A bunch more. I always enjoy listening to the introductory song, Down Down Underneath the Ocean.

The one thing I really cannot understand is the adamant refusal of the Department of Ordance to admit there were a number of serious design flaws in the Mark 14 torpedo. That caused sailors to die and torpedoes to miss their target, not explode, or circle back to sink their own sub. A real travesty.

We were at the pole in November of '82. I turned 22 under the ice. Since of course there is no natural light there in the winter artificial lighting was used. A friend of mine actually took that photo. Had to store film and camera in the freezer to prepare for this and some time was required to slowly bring everything back to room temp.

Actually Aspro is a fitting name for a submarine, the aspro, a fish found abundantly in the upper Rhône River. According to legend, the aspro comes to the surface only in bad weather, when other fishes take refuge near the bottom. This trait gave rise to its nickname, "Sorcerer."

The movie "The Hunt for Red October" is a pretty accurate movie as far as fast attack boats go, not the Red October herself, but the Dallas and the Russian Alpha. The emergency blow is very accurate. My first EB I didn't have a watch station to stand so I was laying in my bunk. The angle of ascent is pretty steep and put my feet against the end wall of my bunk. When we broached the boat literally fell out from under me. Talk about a weird but cool feeling. 8-)

Here is another from the North Pole. Looks like an alien ship with the back lighting. And yes I did get out and walk around on the ice. We brought along some arctic gear so we could venture out on the ice, not all at once. I don't believe anyone passed up the chance to walk on the ice. Really, not many people can say they walked on the North Pole.
Also for your reading I included an article from "All Hands", a Navy publication.

Here's a couple from our port visit Darwin, Northern Territory, Australia.
