We lost another last night.
Ronnie Hawkins of Ozark outfit Ronnie and The Hawks died last night at the age of 87.
For those wondering who he was (wife didn't know either) he formed the original The Band.
His roots blues rock made headlines in the late 50's.
I'll try and find a link to the article...

RIP sir

I was never a fan of The Band, but they were one of those bands that other bands learned from

BTW, you sig line with SRV, I was fortunate to see him in 1985 or 1984,
he played The Mosque here in RVA (Richmond VA)

fantastic show,

Some of the ear-worm stuff has been done to death.

Was actually fortunate enough to catch The Band live in Toronto at age 16.
Everyone was up dancing for most of it, and that was a show worth all it's troubles.
Hawkins was in there too for a couple of numbers, doing his lead/rhythm thing.

Somewhere in D/F-W, there's a 53 footer full of un-released SRV stuff.
Still waiting on that one.
Never did get to see him live, but did catch the original airing of the Austin City Limits show.

Regards,

Doc Sharptail

Saw The Hawk at the Peterborough Flood Relief concert a few years back. Gord Lightfoot performed as well (damn but he's getting old!). Ronnie was a regular at Le Coq d'Or on Yonge street in Toronto.

I never really appreciated The Band until about 10 or 15 years ago. There is a documentary, I think it is called "The Last Dance". There's a bit in there of Levon Helm on drums and singing that sent shivers down my back. It impressed me so much I went to a concert at - maybe it was York University several years ago. Acoustics were horrible and I think this was after Leon had throat cancer. It just wasn't the same.

"Once Were Brothers" showed up on cable here about 10 years ago, and has been in occasional rotation ever since.
If you have Crave, I think it's still on the free "on demand" list.
It's mostly a Robertson take on the history of The Band, and worth watching.
Robertson was one of the executive producers of this documentary, so take it as how you will.
He was pretty honest about how addictions took their toll on the group.
There's quite a bit in there on influences too, that seems pretty realistic. There are some big names involved with that.

Helm was immortalized in song with "Levon" by Elton John.
