What kind of antenna do you need for your purposes?

When I lived in California years ago, one of my neighbors was a Ham operator. He had a tall steel tower in his back yard. Is that kind of equipment still needed?

Depends on what you want to do. You don't need a tall tower to be able to talk across the world. I use dipole (wire) antennas for the worldwide stuff.
