The field guide is a comprehesive description of several characteristics of all common mushrooms. In order to determine each mushroom, one must match up types of stems, rings, gill size- and forked or not forked gills growing season and habitat,as well as ruling out look alikes and lastly, color of spore print. Then one tests the mushroom by giving it to your Mother in law on the sly, and if she survives, then it is good!!! :lol Actually, the final test is trying a small amount, still kind of spooky.I am about to head for the timber in search of more yummy tree denizens. They are starting to say some shrooms have some kind of anti-cancer properties.

Don, what you are describing sounds a lot like what we called "chicken of the woods" a shelf mushroom

They can get pretty big & you must cook them.

But them chicken mushrooms are yummy as heck. Supposedly one of the best mushrooms is a Chanterelle, but I have never confirmed one, and I did eat a tiny piece of very bitter look alike.

There was a sort of shelf mushroom my Dad used to find out in the woods hunting that he would bring home and you could sorta scratch off the surface and make almost a little "carving" into it. Sorta folk-art kinda stuff...
