My main man and hunting pard, LarryBob had a chance to hunt buffalo in Kansas. He's not a gun nut & asked my opinion of a good buffalo rifle.

So I loaned him my 45-70 Marlin Guide gun. Worked like a champ! Whacked Mr Buff @ 110 yards with one shot taking the top off the heart.

There were 7 other hunters & all took at least 3 shots. Two guys had fancy, big dollar Shiloh Sharps in 45-90 & 50-110. Both took multiple shots.

He said some guys from Maine sprung for McMillen custom rifles in exotic calibers he couldn't recall... and took multiple shots.

He used my reloads - I gave him 80 rounds for practice & he took what was left over from that.

405 grain medium hard boolet over 32.0 grains/AA5744 = a buff with Xs on his eyes.

The hunt was not cheep, and I don't think I'd go if I had the chance. But my rifle did!

He stopped by today & dropped off a big bag of buffalo booger. Can't wait to try some!! SW

Is that a midget buffalo or am I mistaken ?
No offense ment, I thought those beasts are huge. The ones I ever saw in the zoo (and live in Colorado) were aniway.
Buffalo steak is extremely yummie and very healthy.

Best regards,
A

This is a 2 year old bull. You are right that they reach immense size, but he wanted tender meat and shot a smaller one. When you cook the meat from an old buffalo - or any other game animal - it's so tough you can barely stick a fork in the gravy. SW

Good reasoning.
I ate buffalo steak in Colorado some years ago. That was great ! We can also buy it vacuum packed at the supermarket here but it's rather expensive.
Some guy tried to raise some buffalo in my town a while back, well, not actually IN town of course but in some large fields near the woods, unfotunately most of the died and he sold the remaining few to some nature reserve. They have a couple herds in Normandy (France).
Most common (big) wild meat over here is deer and wild pig.
Best Regards,
A
