As in we flat did not see any. LarryBob & I had permission to hunt on 3 ranches where we have previously seen hundreds of turkeys. Not a one today - not even a track.
I'm at a loss to explain it. There was a blizzard last month, but I didn't think it was cold enough to freeze anything to death. And there really wasn't anywhere for them to go...
To the south is burnt trees in abundance from a forest fire 2 years ago. To the north is open prairie = no trees or much of the food turks like.
One ranch had a small feed lot which is the easiest life possible for the birds. They hop into the feed bunks and pig out on grain. The ones we saw there last fall were so fat they made Jabba the Hutt look anorexic. I dunno...
I did get a pic of a few grouse. Prairie chickens, I believe. Also a nice white tail freezer buck.
But we weren't at work and had a good time. Shot the breeze with rancher pals who let us hunt - caught up on family gossip...
Season isn't over until Jan 31 so there's plenty of time. SW
