It's a pike, and 16 lbs on my ancient Toledo scale. Of course with my light walleye outfit

Found this inside another eater size pike:

If memory serves me right, that's about a #6 catfish hook. Note the deformation of stomach cavity in lower photo. That big cat hook has been inside that pike for quite a while...

There's me with a usual early season Walleye~ released after this quick photo of course...

I've always wondered about hooks in fish that got away. SW

most hooks in fish that got away are gone in short time - that one was swallowed and damaged the fishes internals , not the norm , wonder if there was a catfish on the hook when swallowed ? might explain its preservation and subsequent added damage , again not the norm , ive caught walleyes with multiple new jigs in their mouth so once caught - not learned - still hungry and still eating ,

Based on the size of the pike the hook was in (about 4-5 lb) I'd gamble on a baited hook.
Usual cat method around here is baiting with frozen shrimp/prawns, or offal from goldeyes.
Pike will feed by scent at night on rare occasions...

yes , ive always caught my biggest pike in canada -in the spring - at an in flowing water source - with dead bait , best if rancid , they feed on opportunity .....till heat of summer then aggressive predators , id hate to be a fish - prehistoric times still exist below the surface - eat or be eaten

very nice fish BTW , ive got to get out on the water more this year ,lord knows how much more time i have and i want to get the most of it
