They are habituals too- keep returning to places where they scored food.
Maybe a 14.3 gr dome in the ear could be a cure?

I don't know how many pike I've taken out of Hazel Creek that have had stomach-fulls of those. A full grown adult rusty crayfish (as they are called here) is about the diameter of my thumb, and about an inch longer than that same thumb's length. We used to catch them for bait when we were kids. Turning over stones on rocky shorelines usually netted a handful or 2. They were fished for in traps commercially in the late 50's and early 60's~ sold as bait at road-side bait stands, under the name of crabs, of all things... Regards, Doc Sharptail |

Hazards of trapping crawdads... Pulled the trap - which was a lot farther down the canal from where I dropped it - and no bait. Only one conclusion to draw - some coon had a tilapia and crawdad dinner courtesy of me. Well, I guess they gotta eat, too but still... So loaded another filet from the freezer and back in the canal it went. I did chuckle at the mental image of some coon having a great time reaching around in the trap for the reeking bait and whatever crawdads were there. The only thing they like better is sweet corn. We'll see if the free loader comes back tonight. SW |

I give up. Coons raided my trap 3x in the irrigation canal so I pulled it in favor of a nearby public fishing pond. Big trailer park right beside it, so I thought I was being all sneaky, painting the white clothesline rope green so it would be hard to spot. That worked, but when I checked the trap just now the bait was gone. Coons are having dinner on me. Again. Plus, thinking it through, if they patrol this pond, they've probably thinned out the crawdads, too. Especially with little coons from this years' hatch to feed. So my trap's back in the garage until I think of a better place. My only hope is if coon pelts bring good money this winter. SW |

I actually like coons and wouldn't hunt or trap them - I have a license to do both - but I draw the line at setting out free dinner. Coons gotta eat, too - just not on my dime. SW |

There are actually quite a few of them here in the city. They are most active along waterways, and can be seen in large familial groups at sunset. There are also garbage coons here that get to impressive physical sizes. Last one I saw looked like a ring tailed St. Bernard. I keep my distance, and have no interest in taking them as I don't consider them food for us. Regards, Doc Sharptail |

never considered them food either so i understand your stance here , my friend shoots those that invade his homestead space because of the havoc the wreak , his neighbors often request his service because he is efficient at the eradication , if they stay away they have no issue he does not seek them out simply claims those that cant stay away , seems there are a lot that dont get the message , think last we talked he has bagged about thirty this year , i think there is an overabundance of them in eastern wisconsin , he carries a 10/22 rifle , mosberg short barreled shotgun and sig pistol depending on the need and location in the yard , he has a goodly number of acres in lowland for disposal , the coyotes need to eat too - there are an abundance of those too , |

my ex sister in law lives in an area called Layefette's Point, it's the bluff in Colonial Heights that overlooks Petersburg (across the Appomattox river) she is now a cat lady, 2 inside, a couple outside, and coons, they come up out of the woods behind her place and eat when the cats do, oddly enough, they get along with the cats, and take turns at the food bowls,, she has even let them in by accident (not wearing her glasses,,,) the eat their fill, and mosey across the yard and down the hillside back at the same time the next day FWIW,, we call them Trash Panda's here |

only thing about coons is when they are too friendly they might have rabies , ive never been much of a fan , squils are only moderately better - i gots lots of those here sept when the owls move in and draw down the population a bit ...its getting to be about that time again , |

when I was a kid, Grandma has a pet Coon,, the Coon was named Sally, and loved to sit on the arm of the big recliner and mooch poptarts from us tykes, she later returned to the woods, and when she had a family, she would bring them up to the house like a long lost relative, mooch around, and take her little coons back to the woods, FWIW, I set up a new camera system at my shop, one of the first alerts for the outside camera, was a Coon,, at like 2am got an inside alert tonight,, damn mouse (camera is sitting on a safe, need to (a) trap the mouse (B) mount the camera in the ceiling,,, |
