Plan to eradicate bovine TB clears Minn. Senate panel

ST. PAUL (AP) -- A plan to contain and eradicate bovine tuberculosis in northwestern Minnesota has the support of a Senate panel.

The Finance Committee has approved the bill from Senator Rod Skoe (skoy).

Its main provision is a $3.5 million buyout and fencing program for herd owners in the outbreak area.

Ranchers and farmers could sell their herds for $500 per head, plus ongoing yearly payment of $75 per head until the area is disease-free. The animals would be destroyed.

Livestock owners could also get aid to put up more fences separating cattle from deer, since bovine TB spreads through contact between the animals.

Skoe says livestock owners have recognized the need for aggressive, quick action against the disease.

And they have federal sharpshooters killing the deer right now, and they want to let them use helicoptors. They were waiting on permission last I heard. And we get stuck with the bill, but what the heck, we got deep pockets. Our DNR loves to waste money, just give them a small excuse and tehy can ruin their budget, and then they start sqwuaking that they are going broke, and need to raise fees on something. The regular deer season here is a nightmare, all the differnet zones with different dates to hunt. People want it changed, but 1 guy complains it would inconveniance him, and they forget about doing anything. Now they're wasting more money "studying" changes. It's all a joke, just more politicians in charge, and all they pay is lip service
