... turkin' around Pumpkin Creek! Not a whole lot to tell - I went over to where I hunt to see if I could spot where they were going to roost so I could return in the AM, and on the way in, about 15 were crossing the path I drive. They had just come from the creek where they watered for the night.
I had wifey & preppy daughter along - my shotgun was in the back. So I stepped out with one shell, loaded it into the shotgun & had 2 options.
One turk was about 10 paces away, trying to get into a currant thicket. Too close! Another was about 20 paces away ready to fly - had its neck all stretched out. Good enough for me! I took the head shot & it did not even flop around afterward. No body damage at all!
It was smaller than my other possible shot, but the smaller bird will be more tender - I figure it was one of this year's hatch. Nice & fat! There's a circle of corn nearby & the crop was full of it - a few sunflower seeds, so it will have a good flavor. I like wild lurkey a LOT better than store-bought.
I'll try for a bigger one next week - in Nebr, you get 2 birds per license.
It was no big game expedition by any means, but dang, they taste good!!!
