I am happy to report that my old 1873 Trapdoor has proven that even new
deer are no match for old iron.

100 yrd shot. 500 gr lead slug (Thanks Bruce) over 64 gr of fff goex in a starline casing.

deer wandered into the clear about 100 yrds from me across the creek.
slow swing of the rifle to my shoulder rolled the hammer to full cock.
laid the sights on the vitals and KERBOOM!!! Deer slams to the ground like it got hit with a lightning bolt. this is my kinda rifle. Deer down NOW!!
no tracking and very little meat lost. just BOOM...THUD.

No pictures because it wasn't a big buck or anything just a meat deer.
I am a happy fella though got a deer with the trapdoor and it performed great!! Hit's right where it's aimed too.

With that 500 grain pill & a full case of BP that 'old iron' kicks like a modern day boom stick now doesn't it?

So I guess the 1873 sights work OK with the 500 grainer? Have you fired at targets to see the difference in elevation vs. the 405 gr. original load?
