...turking around Crow Butte! Was driving past a small ranch on the way to a new public hunting area and saw over 100 lurkeys in one gaggle! My hunting pard LarryBob was wishing out loud there would be that many just up the road, but I suggested we take the direct approach...

We drove in, knocked on the door and asked permission. It worked! A very nice gentleman suggested we shoot about 10 apiece as he had too many, but my license was only good for 2 & LarryBob had one punch left on his.

Pow! Pow! Pow! Three lurkeys were in the back of the pickup about 3 hours later. We stopped and let the man know we were leaving and had shut all the gates. Thanked him profusely and was invited back.

We plan to send him a Christmas gift certificate to a decent restaraunt here.

The lurkeys got kinda stiff on the way home - a raw day - and the pic didn't turn out too well. Smaller hen about 8 or 9 pounds - larger hen 18#, I'm guessing.

Shot both right in the face & preserved the meat. I LIKES wild lurkey! Better than store bought!

Wish we had turkeys over here. But we do have a lot of pheasant (ringnecks?). They are bred, but released when not yet full grown. By autumn they're fat enough and "undomesticated" for good hunting.

I personally don't have a hunting liscence. You need to take a year's worth of evening courses for that and also possess or rent hunting land. Hunting is not allowed in public forrests.

I've poached a few rabbits and pigeons when I was young (shame on me) and I once shot a deer on what you could call a private reserve (where deer are bred for consumption). I bought one and the owner left me the choice of hunting for it myself or have him do it for me.

I'd love to go hunting for wild boar with my wife's uncles and cousins in Ukraine. THAT must be a kick.

Should you ever make it over here, I would take you out to get a turkey or deer. Then I would like to go for a Ukranain wild boar, too! SW
