Unemployed Can Enjoy Theater and Arts

With unemployment holding in the double digits, tens of millions of taxpayer dollars are slated for the state’s arts. By late spring, tax dollars will flow from the taxpayers’ pockets to the arts’ coffers as the State Arts Board and regional art councils begin distributing its 46 percent share of the $95 million biennial proceeds from the Clean Water, Land and Legacy Amendment.
Within the state’s dedicated sales tax increase that took effect last July, $95 million is earmarked for public broadcasting. Yes, that’s right, while the amendment sounds like funding for water quality improvement, nearly half will be spent on the arts and funneled to government subsidized radio stations.
