so - going back to the top - whats up with the batts ? are they being commercially raised here ? for what - guano is readily accessible in caves and such - gallopoulos island ? oh yes thats birds isnt it.......what do they do that we want done - and do they really sit still for washing ? and why ?????

No idea. I lifted the pic from a Russian site, and as usual there was no caption.

The bats have clearly been hosed down, though... which doesn't seem to have bothered them much or they'd be gone. SW

**ETA** By way of basic google-fu, I found it. It's much hotter than usual in Oz right now & fruit bats are suffering. Animal preservation groups have been picking up bats that succumbed to heat but were still alive. The drill is to hang them from clothes lines or racks like the one shown and give them a shower.

The bats enjoy the treatment so much they will return for more of the same. And yes, they leave more poop than a gaggle of overfed geese.

Fruit bats are considered a delicacy in some of the pacific island groups.

This is of particular importance especially in Guam where there was a very high incidence of neurodegenerative diseases like Lou Gehrig's disease. There is a whole history related to multiple sources of the diseases which ultimately is caused by a toxic amino acid produced by a blue-green algae. They are symbiotic on the roots of a cycad palm called a false sago. WWII people ground the seeds as a substitute for flour. The amino acid was in the seeds. They told people stop eating the seeds. There was still a high incidence of ngd. They found out that the fruit bats also loved the seeds, ate them and resulted in amplified levels of the amino acid. They told the people to stop eating the bats. The incidence of NGDs dropped dramatically.

In related news : These same blue green algae can be found in other places like the U.S. in small to large bodies of water and there are clusters of ndgd near some these.
The AA (BMAA orB-methylamino-L-alanine) is improperly substituted in protein formation.

It is suggested that this may contribute to incidences of neurodegenerative diseases around the world.

Note that earlier I reported that people used the seed of the sago palm as a flour. I meant to write the seeds of a Cycad palm called the "false sago". I corrected it in the original post, but be aware of the error.

Note also that these blue green (cyano) bacteria have been reported in some algal blooms in the ocean and supposedly resulted in high levels of BMAA which may end up in some species of fish. The proponents argue that the presence of BMAA may result in slow neuronal death. These proposals are highly debated and other researchers have stated they have not proven Koch's postulates. So do not take this information as gospel as it has not been absolutely proven. Just be aware that some researchers have postulated that natural biological agents might cause or contribute to some neurodegenerative diseases.
Note that about 1/3 of sea food is fed to live stock so the Levels of BMAA if they are there get amplified when the animals eat ocean sourced food and then we eat the animals. No one has done long term studies of the levels of BMAA in sea food or live stock so don't go running amuck or get alarmed. I also do not know whether BMAA producing cyanobacteria in fresh water produce enough BMAA to be of concern to wildlife, live stock or humans.

Lou Gehrig loved pickled eel, but BMAA has not been found in them (they were not able to check the ones he ate).
There is/was also high levels of pcbs in the waters of the Hudson river where Gehrig fished. So don't go jumping to conclusions.

Not intending on high jack your thread, but in a continuation of toxic amino acids see domoic acid found in some Pacific blue green algal blooms. Causes amnesiac disease in sea lions, humans etc.

I have to thank my wife for bringing Frieda to my attention several years ago. The id was instantaneous and hard to miss. There; continuity restored.

Selma Hayek played Frieda in the movie Frida 2002. She would not play the role unless they allowed the eyebrows and facial hair which were fake because Selma had plucked hers earlier and they grew back thinner. Too bad she had to deal with slime ball Harvey.

I always look forward to your informative additions. Learned a few things, I have! SW

old navy - your contributions are always enlightening and ive learned much from them , we had blue green algae blooms in a local lake a while back , the DNR poisoned them i think - i know they went to great effort to get folks to stay away and rid the place of it - i think it killed a dog that swam in it IIRC
