Regarding seagulls, other birds, and habanero peppers. Birds cannot taste the capsaicin. One trick to keep mammals such as squirrels and raccoons out of bird feeders is to mix ground hot pepper with the seeds or coat them with capsaicin. Some say that ghost peppers will still cause them digestive upset, but this has not been verified.

I got the habanero pepper idea from the fake news book about the Glomar Explorer - the CIA's deep sea recovery ship that went after a soviet sub in very deep water.

It had become inoperable for some reason, sank and the entire crew perished. So the agency came up with the hare-brained idea to make a clamshell arrangement to be lowered by cable and recover the sub with code books therein.

To get the idea out the plan didn't work as intended, the book was written explaining how the mission only grabbed a small part of the sub that contained little of intelligence value. How much was learned still isn't clear, but it was a lot more than the book lets on. I'm guessing they hoped to delay changes in Russian code systems.

In the book, there was a chapter about a crew of Texans who had clearance and worked on different aspects of the mission. In one scene, they were taking a break on deck tossing various food items for gulls to grab on the fly. One Texan wiseguy reportedly tossed a super hot pepper to a gull who went into convulsions from the burning sensation.

so - i am guessing the ramps are for cars and trucks - not trains ? it looked like a derailment waiting to happen to me except ....i doubt plastic generally causes it or rubber with woven fabric filled with water ??? pennies and nickles never phased them back in the 50s ....just sayin

Those pads won't derail a motor - all that weight will split them. Fire people are supposed to call the RR to have the disp stop traffic.

In cold weather if somebody would put a spike or similar object on the track, when the motor hit it, the rail would break. In really cold temps, they break like spaghetti sticks.

When the rail breaks it will split... then you have something in the dirt. SW
