Yesterday at the Louisville gun show was very, very good to me. Picked up a very nice 1881 Springfield trapdoor rifle. Now some brass and bullets and a trip to the range. :grin:

Its nice and the stock should be in better condition due to the intense fondling its now getting. :jmp:


He did score well, very well. Nice sight picture from the old sights. She should be accurate and then some. I couldn't see the rifling well though.

I may well be wrong here but the only model 1881 Springfield trapdoor I am aware of is a 20 gage forager shotgun made from misc. parts that were on hand and was considered a secondary arm only. What are the marking on it?

Sir,

I just had my first chance to examine the barrel closely. It appears to have some rifling. It's not particularly distinct, but it is present. The only markings on the receiver are the usual U.S. Eagle and the U S Springfield stamping. Other than that, the only other stamp is in the stock. This stamp is a rounded rectangle with script letters that appear to be SWP and a date of 1881.

Thank you, it clears things up nicely indeed, SWP is the inspectors mark and the boxed 1881 is the inspection/issue date cartouche. Rifle is probably one of the 18,896 model 1887 standard rifles made new that year, That is in addition to the 1,014 made with ramrod bayonets. Serial number range that year ended around 180,000. The model number is usually on top of the door right in front of the hinge, serial number is behind the door (for standard models) partly hidden by the lock lever and the hammer. The rear sight should also be marked with an R, that was to indicate that it was a rifle sight, carbine sites were marked with a C.
As you can probably tell I have a sort of a soft spot for the trapdoors, at 14 models/types/variations and still hunting them. Only shoot 2 of them though.
Opps not 1887, mistype and lack of proofreading agin, it should be 1873. Sorry.

OK then. The trapdoor is marked U.S. Model 1873. The serial number is: 208614.
The rear sight is indeed marked with an 'R'. The cleaning rod is present. There was no bayonet included with rifle.

OK , its an 1873 standard , that makes sense , made in 1881
