Can you identify this feature on a rifle, I know what it is. But do you? It surprised me when I bought this rifle from a neighbor, he didn't know either. I learned from another collector. Not the best pic, but you can see the end of the barrel on the Savage 99 |

You guys are either plenty old or you see plenty of old guns, probably both . That is a threaded cover to protect the threads on the end of the barrel, it was for the Maxim Device . A suppressor sold through hardware stores and such, when you wanted to shoot smallbore inside for parlor matches. Or, so as not to spook game while hunting with larger caliber, they were made illegal by the 1930's. That Savage is a 1925 Model 1899/99 in .303 Sav, it was a transitional time when Savage was changing the model name to just "99". |

Being the machinist that I used to be I knew it was a thread protector. If the bill ever gets out of the state senate committee and passes we will be able to hunt with suppressors here in the worthless nut state. Rad |

But military men are better when it comes to knowledge concerning guns or any firearms as they studied a lot about it. _____________ |

ok , interesting first post - never underestimate did you know that a lot of us have studied in depth [albeit in our own selected areas often] and many here are "military men & women" there is a lot of knowledge that is often hidden beneath the good natured/usually tasteful banter , even a well respected firearms author or two are hiding here , |
