I took my new to me Remington Rolling Block in .43 Spanish to the range and the very first round had a catastrophic failure with the case. It broke apart with one piece in my hand and the other still in the breech. Burner supplied to solution to getting the broken piece out which worked like a charm. However, one of the people I was shooting with is a metallurgist and his opinion is that the brass seemed to be brittle. An examination of the brass reveals the appearance of never having been annealed. I have proceeded to pull the other 19 rounds and will be annealing the brass in due course. The issue I need help/comments on is, as I was pulling the bullets, I discovered that the powder was coming out of the case looking more like black talcum powder instead of FFg black powder. I am wondering if this pulled powder is OK to use or should I use new powder to reload with? :daz: To be honest, I am leaning towards loading with new. Better to be safe than wind up with a destroyed rifle in my hands.

Yeah - I'd go with fresh powder. The finer granulation will have a different burning rate. What make was the brass? I've heard a lot of negative comments about the stuff from Australia. Can't recall the name right now. SW

The brass was made by Jamison. I have some of their 577-450 Martini-Henry brass that has performed flawlessly. I have annealed 8 cases so far. they now look like most of the brass I have bought-with that discoloration on the neck.
I had pretty much decided to discard the old powder. You are absolutely correct that the burn rate has changed and I don't need any additional excitement!
I think the Australian brass is made by Bertram.

Aha! Bertram! Heard a lot of stories concerning case separation and splitting with that.

I use Jamison in 577 Snider & 577/450 with no issues. At 5 bucks a whack, you would hope it holds up. Might be worth an eMail to them to see about a 1 for 1 swap. SW

Having once put a match to a small pile of black powder, I can only imagine the fun flash a greater quantity will make. I ought to have a camera handy when this event happens.

Where did case break? At the rim or somewhere forward of that. I am using Jamison brass, no problem with it yet????? I would photograph it and send them a pic of it.
