This is the M1862 Dreyse Zundnadelgewehr (needle ignition). The Prussian Dreyse actually was adopted in 1841.

I shoot a cartridge made with a 62 cal. lead ball rather than the football shaped one which would be more appropriate and get pretty good results at 100 yards. I made some extra needles so as not to damage the original.

I tried my hand at crafting a more period sling and I did alright except for getting the leather a bit too thin.

I also have and shoot a m1866 (1867) French Chassepot so maybe I can get around to a 100 yard match with these two Franco-Prussian brawlers!

Excellent! I'd like to hear details of how you make the ammo! SW

Ask and you will receive Neb.

I turned some mandrels to form first the papier mache sabot for the 62 cal. lead ball (which also holds the RMS musket cap). and the paper cartridge. I now use parchment paper but have also used regular computer paper for this. In goes the powder (I use BP substitute because it is easier to obtain for me), then the sabot, next the lead ball, and finally pinch, twist, tie.

This formula leaves some paper residue and Pyrodex is very dirty but it shoots pretty well. I tried nitrated paper which I bought through Buffalo Arms online but the burn success was about the same. I suspect that if one were to use real BP the combustion would be much better!

Thanks Neb.

An interesting side note. The retailer that I purchased it from certainly thought that I would never even get the bolt functioning smoothly again, much less shoot fairly accurately. :hah: I reckon that I should send them a video of me firing it! :rotflma:

fantastic , we see so little of the old brought back to life , we see the resurrected in collections but they are seldom taken to the shooting position , congrats on that one ,
