Real cowpokes. I took a drive through ranch country today where I grew up - not too far from where I sit right now - and thought to get Dad's album out afterward. These pics are from the 30s & 40s in the Sandhills of Nebr. It hasn't changed much since then. SW

1) Notice the sturdy fence around the yard. This was necessary to keep the cattle out. Given the opportunity, they would rub on the house - knock the clothesline down - eat the flowers... uncouth cattle back then.

2) This is a poor copy of a newspaper pic showing my GrandDad at the sale barn in Hyannis, Nebr 1903. On the back he had written "this was a good horse". He would know, I suppose.

3) Break time. Since we are blessed with few trees to impede vision, one simply takes a seat on the ground when it's time out. Let the nags graze a bit... enjoy the scenery... life is good.

4) This is Dad in the late 30s.

5) Feeding hay to the cattle. I have actually done this with Dad in the 50s & 60s. Lots of fresh air! Very fresh air!

6) Branding. The guy in the bibs is Grand Dad again. He carried a syrup pail and de-nutted calves. These appendages were then washed off at the nearest windmill and enjoyed the next day at a good old nut fry! mmm-MMM! Nuts & baked beans! Good and good for ya!

Good pics. In a sense life hasn't changed much out your way other than the mechanical things to replace some of the horses. When I went hunting in WY I would see the neighbor on his tractor taking a bale of hay for his cattle every morning.

i too have had those "left overs" from cutting bull calves for supper. Ms Beaulah's bull calves were done all day long, then for supper we would be invited to her house for stew n gravy with biscuits.......and i would always ask...these are the nuts we cut today are they?....she would always say no 8-)
but i knew....and they tasted good after a hard day's work.........

i still like cattle only ONE way.......one a dinner plate with a baked potatoe!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

neat pictures steve..........wasn't shoes horses fun?...and stringing bobwire in the summertime......oh what fun there too!!!!!!!!!

Putting up hay & swatting deer flies all day... oh, yeah. Mom made me a water jug from an old Clorox bottle. Which gave the water a 'nice' flavor.

But the chlorine probably killed a few germs & microbes so I was able to put off amoebic dysentery until SE Asia. SW

Daughter and son-in-law came from Calif to visit and we took them to the Fort Worth Stockyards. I saw "Calf Frys" on the menu so I order plenty. They came out breaded and deep fried with country gravy. We all loved them. I didn't tell the kids what they were until the next day. They still talk about going back to that place with the good calf balls.
