I work for TxDOT as maintenance contract inspector. That means I have to ride herd on low bid contractors and make sure they do what they agreed to do in the manner that we require them to do it. There's a lot more to it than that but the rest is mainly BS. Most of the year I'm stuck working the Northern part of Tarrant County, which is basically Ft Worth. I keep our guard rails up after the drunks and idiots declare daily war on them.

Last summer, I got assigned to a gig that covered 7 counties. Most of it out in the "boonies". I LOVED every second of it. I was in charge of part of the striping and the installation of raised pavement markers ('buttons') on several hundred miles of roads that were seal coated or chip sealed. My crew wasn't the best but we finally got done.

I took a LOT of pictures of various stuff that caught my fancy. Some were OK, some weren't. Steve has seen a lot of 'em on another forum and has asked that I post them here too.

So here goes. I'll try not to bury you. LOL

I started early every day and watched the sun come up just about every morning and go down every evening.

Down the road from there is a neat little feed store run by an 88 year old lady. Her husband was a WWII USMC vet and her grandson just finished a tour with Corps. She's a trip and her old store is just WAY COOL.
Image

They lived in this old house when they opened the store in 1952.

This was all that was left of The Pate Museum of Transportation. "Aggie" Pate had quite a neat deal. He died and the kids let it go to Hell. They auctioned off all his cars and toys, most of the warbirds were repossessed and this old C-119 was headed for a new home.

Nothing left there but the building now. :(

Found some "yard art" down near Glen Rose.

and a herd of "pet" elk.

Excellent pictures, that Feed-store reminds me of one somewhere around Flagstaff we would pass on the way to one of my fathers favorite hunting places.

:welcome: to our madness. :crzy: :crzy:

That store sort of reminds of the company store my Grandfather ran down in KY.

In out in the middle o' nowhere cemeteries I've seen a lot of stones of children from 1917 or so. I think there was a big influenza outbreak then.

4 yo grand daughter came down with that last week & is much better now. What a difference antibiotics make! SW

over the years i have been drawn to these old cemetaries as well ,interesting reading and imagining , also interesting to connect to history - like the influenza epidemic of WWI era ,

found a "lost" one along the riverbank while canoeing once , all overgrown and in disaray , didnt realize what it was till we walked into it , it was associated with a comunity that had died out when the rail road took a path north a few miles ,

a few years later it hit front page as being "found" by locals and put back in order ,

In the family cemetery in eastern KY there is a tombstone that that has two adults a five? children listed on it. The adults were Dad's sisters, I thinking one was a teen. The kids was also the children of my mother's brother. There was also another of mother's sisters that married a younger one of dad's brothers.

They all died in a house fire in the middle of the night while my uncle was digging coal. This happened in the early 40s.

Stories like the house fire are sad indeed. In one of the cemeteries I visited there was plot with 6 headstones. It had a concrete border and five of the stones were obviously children's headstones. The sixth was normal sized. I wandered over and started looking at names and dates. The five kids all died as infants none more than a couple of months old. The sixth stone was the mother. She was 19 years old. Poor girl spent nearly a third of her short life pregnant before she died. No headstone anywhere close for the father that I could find. Saw several other sets of stones where a man had been buried amongst two or three wives that had gone on before him.

Oh well, my favorite sunrise windmill again without the hawk.

Some poor rattle snake lost his ass in that cemetery.

The "new/old" Chalk Mountain Masonic Lodge.

It happens to be the oldest operating "moon lodge" in Texas. Back in the day, all lodges met on the night of the full moon so the members could see their way home after the meeting. This lodge is the original upstairs with a new foundation. The old site was sold out from under it and the Texas Masons rallied and cut the top loose, built a new first floor and hauled the top to the present site. It's about a 1/4 mile from where it started.

I like taking pics of and checking out old buildings.
