In the days before Westinghouse invented an air brake system, brakies moved along car tops to apply or release brakes... A freezing rain or blizzard was a good way to lose brakies. SW

This is interesting because a locomotive was shipped to a place where there were no rail lines.
They used her to first lay track to the rail head at Pembina, N.D., which was probably the most efficient way to obtain rails. This was the start of the Canadian Pacific Railway. She was later used for laying track east of Winnipeg, and then West...

very interesting story , glad someone thought enough of her to save her ,

The locomotive was on display in front of the CPR station when I was kid.
Access was unrestricted, and we climbed all over it.

There's a final restoration photo on the link above showing her with the proper original design smoke stack. The stack was likely removed and replaced with something longer when it was run as motive power for the saw-mill...

This is Wyoming in 1954.
The yard steamers I saw from grandads place were much like this...
Probably 1/500 sec or faster. Not much motion blur here at all.

During the depression it was considered too expensive to spray weeds along the ROW so they were burned. Doesn't take long for the weeds to bounce back from a fire, though. SW

Russian locomotive in 1939.
She's blowing down here after a high speed run.
The front of the locomotive would not be a good place to stand at such a time...

really cool looking old train , im glad they are preserving these

Found these while following a G.M. "other" manufacturing link.



This was built before G.M. bought the Electro-motive company.



This was built sometime in the 30's, after the G.M. acquisition...

I had been looking to refresh my memory on the 30-M-1, but no dice.
They had a bit on the .50 cal M-2 which G.M. did a fair amount of, but not quite equaling the number of the carbines.
