Illinois Central Green Diamond 1932 at Milwaukee.

"Petie" cigarette lighter camera.

I doubt 16mm film and wick type lighter fluid got along very well in the same die-cast housing, but the idea lasted long enough for this picture to be taken....

The green motor didn't have near the horsepower of those black smokers in the background. But it was good for advertising.

And if you held it right, that would make a worthy spy camera. SW

the green motor had that look , yes adverting , and we all know they improved after that , but im glad to see they were looking to improve - big expenditure even in those times , maybe more so in those times ? what an interesting time to live in , so much innovation and so little government regulation , the inventors actually could put things out there to improve our lives without that immediate lawsuit to contend with , was it diesel or diesel/electric at that point ?

It was Electro Motive's (EMC) first viable diesel electric. That company still makes locomotives, but I dislike them - too "idiot proof".

I really liked the EMC SD-60 & SD-40-2. The 20 cylinder SD-45 was supposed to be able to crank out major horsepower, but the long crankshaft was prone to bending. Needless to say, mechanics soon ran out of spare cranks.

So they had a fail safe circuit that would shut everything down if the traction motors were pulling too much current. Last one I ran was on a work train. Mechanics fabricated a reason to get it out of their shop & we never saw it again.

And... looks like I rambled on a bit. My bad. SW

Adding a bit: EMC was acquired by General Motors and became EMD = Electro Motive Division of GM.

The other modern American locomotive maker was General Electric. My fave GE was the Dash-8. Before I retired, we ran a LOT of GE C44ac s. 4400 horsepower & stout as all get out.

With 4 of those, you could drag 20,000 trailing tons up grades leaving the Powder River basin and not break an extreme sweat. But on a hard pull, they slugged down 10 gallons of fuel oil every 3 minutes at full throttle.

Hard to believe, but it was still the most efficient way to move that kind of tonnage. SW

I had read that before WW2 the Navy was trying to build submarine diesels but could not make good large ones so they went to the Rail road diesel makers to power their subs. Is this true?

I'll look around a bit tomorrow, but I kinda doubt it. Didn't Fairbanks Morse make sub engines? GE & EMD make their own.

Fr8 dude was a submariner - he might have something to add. SW

In sort of the same vein as above...

Tessina wrist camera. I can't see much practibility there, unless one is a southpaw....

The Tessina full size leaf shutter cameras were made in much greater quantities, and can often be found in functional condition.

Not much for power, but they could get passenger sets from point A to point B in a hurry. With so many passenger trains on the main, a timetable actually meant something.

If you had to be at point B at 10:00, you better darn well make it on the mark. You see this in old school RR watches. They had to be certified accurate before you could have them on company property. SW

This small locomotive was part of a kiddie ride somewhere in Germany.
It pulled 3 small passenger cars and had an "industrial" V/W motor...

This Baldwin Locomotive may be the later Countess of Dufferin.
Pic was taken in Minnesota where she was bought second hand,
and barged down the Red R. to Winnipeg.

Will come back to this with specifics if anyone's interested.
