Forming super-cell at top. That is not the sunset in back-ground. It is a dust cyclone being back-lit by the sun which is actually setting to the far west of photo frame.
Things happen incredibly rapidly under these conditions. I guesstimated the dust column to be about 2 miles wide. It was moving to the North East at about 40 mph.
My little uplander van was really rocking on it's springs in the strong winds. About 45 sec. after this photo was taken, we were smacked by a blinding down pour of incredibly heavy rain. I was expecting hail stones, but luckily, none were seen. The heavy rain lasted almost a half hour...
I had been stifling yawns all afternoon, fishing from shore at Breezy Point. Photo was taken at the Hwy #4 bridge on the west side of the Red R.
