Image

Motifs on the upper reaches of the old Winnipeg auditorium.
This looks like a recent replacement or refurbishment.

Image

Some more of the same.

Image

Another look at some late 30's architectural artwork on the same building.

Image

Night lamp at the same location. I need to go back and take my time with these under more favorable weather conditions. There's a bit of a spike to the base that got cut off in the hurried snapping I was doing.
These were originally carbon arc fixtures. I think they have been up-graded to L.E.D.'s, and no longer pool the light in the original fashion.

Image

This is a new wing of the Winnipeg Art Gallery.
It will house a permanent Inuit art gallery.
The old auditorium is in the back-ground at lower right.

Image

Soapstone carving in the courtyard of the new gallery.
It is about 9 feet high.

Image

Another view of the same piece.

Image

This I like a lot. It is one of my better photographs.
Exposed for the shadows, and then opened up a 1/3 of a stop.
ISO 200 on auto W/B.

Image

Quick snap of the same piece with the camera on full "P" mode program...

This is the top most level of the Lindsay Building downtown.
I was really pushing the little p&s Canon pretty hard.
Taken from about 400-500 yds from the building's footings.
About an 80% crop. ISO 320, f8, 1/1000th sec. hand-held.
I rested the base of the camera on the steering wheel.
The windshield was pretty dirty as well.

As usual, I need to go back and do this properly from a tripod...

Doc Sharptail.

Me and Mrs. outside Rainbow Stage.
Mural behind us is for "A Mid Summer's Night Dream" 8 or 9 years ago.

Another squirrel stash. There's a thin layer of acorns under the leaves in this hole.
Texture and resolution study with the little Canon point and shoot...

This is a finial from the old Canadian Pacific Railway station.
The local limestone is actually quite severely weathered,
and a lot of the detail lines have been lost.

I have a whole series from this building...

They are frequently used as water spouts to direct rainwater away from the stone work...
This is on the North face of the Hotel Fort Garry, about the 12th floor.
All of these have been taken with my little Canon point and shoot digital.
It's sensor is tiny- about the diameter of a .270 bullet.

There's a scary one in Italian marble atop the Paris Building downtown.
If I was a pigeon, I'd think twice about hanging around...

The poor little point and shoot digital with it's teensy tiny sensor is being pushed to it's absolute limit here.

An extreme test of the little Canon point and shoot digital.
Taken out my back door yesterday morning at maximum digital zoom,
which is supposed to be 80X.

When I take it up to full size on my laptop computer, pixillating is quite evident,
but not quite as distracting as other low contrast situations in which I've tried it.
Ran a couple of shots with the 200 Q f-4 nikkor on the F2 body as a test control.
We shall see when I get the film in and developed...

Edit: I have used the forum photo software here so it can be slightly inspected.
Simply click on the image for a larger view.
Image is approximately 520 x 800, and a far cry from the 100% crops that I can do with my photo suite. I mostly use the imgur site for posting images here- it is far easier, and less invasive to do.

Today was pay respects at the cemetery day. Very foggy this morning which always makes for interesting pics. Seen here is Chimney Rock in fog. Later, I spied a spidey web all wet from fog and dew. I was really wishing for a better camera with macro lens and a tripod.

Since it was all foggy I was taking my time on a remote county road which worked out well for everybody concerned when I happened on these "Nebr road hazards".

One has a braided tail, so they're somebody's pets - maybe roping horses. Somebody needs to fix fence! SW

That's a nice set. I likes the horses and spider web.
The fog around chimney rock is nice too.
Suspecting a small sensor here~ phone, or point and shoot?
Color rendition smells like Canon- especially on the equines' backs...

That wind-shield would get me pulled over here- in normal times.
Nothing normal about these times though- a lot get's by as un-necessary contact risk...

Yep - my point & shoot Canon.

Illegal to have cracked windshields where you live? Those are pretty common here. SW

Author:  Doc Sharptail [ Thu Jun 03, 2021 11:00 am ]
Post subject:  Re: Some more local snaps

Not quite "illegal" in the sense of even a misdemeanor.
Both the Federales and local constabulary take a dim view of them.
They are a legal reason to get pulled over- just like burned out head and tail lights are.
If the damage is severe enough, a work order can be issued on the spot.
It happened to me with my first car. The glass ended up very badly starred, and was bad enough for the safety work order to be issued.

I've also been pulled over for burnt out headlights that I was unaware of. In both instances, the safety work order was issued.

I've been pulled over for the longitudinal gravel cracks such as yours, and given the wave-on after d/l and proof of insurance...

Around here less severe issues will rate a verbal warning.
The safety work orders are recorded, and it's not wise to get pulled over for the same thing after the repair period expires.

Post subject:  Re: Some more local snaps

we get similar , but its seldom unless severe , ive seen a lot of vehicles with issues such as that , i think they look for something worth ticketing for before they resort to this , more $ return in a more grievous offence , if they pulled over every loud muffler and broken windshield they could spend most of their day writing fix-its ,

they are too busy trying to pass the electric car issue - that will not work here in the end , not enough plug in stations and most folks cant afford the time to recharge if they looked at it realistically but whatever stopped a democrat from pushing an agenda before ? real life will sort a lot of this out in the end

There's your erstwhile photog in reflection with the little P&S Canon at work.
Bullet bumper on a '57 Chev Nomad pictured in the auto pages here.
I know the originals had a hefty black rubber insert here.
This custom job went with stainless, which is sort of tasteful.

Image

A pink carnation. All I need is the white sports coat.
Marty Robbins was actually one of the better ones.

Image

Something yellow and nice.

Image

As long as contrast is not too much of a chore, the tiny sensor on the Canon is capable of fine delivery.

Image

Not opened yet. Still a good color test for the usually some what cold glass on the Canon.

Last flower detail for a while...

Today's feeble attempt at wild life shots. The buzzard was shot just before sunrise - lighting problems & the goats were rather far away. I was hoping for a line of buzzards on fence posts, but only one today. SW

I really like the lighting in the goat shot.
The long sun rays do a lot for image quality.
I have a bit to get up on the site.
Sort of major interruption to the photo schedule today.
Got my first dslrDSLR-a Nikon D'200 that is a bit long in the tooth.
Body only.
Further details coming soon on the appropriate page.
