 Early constant aperture variant 80-200mm f4.5 Vivitar zoom at 200mm, f4.5. Nikon D-200. We are getting a bit of smoke here from wildfires, and it does things to the sunset. Last night's half moon was quite brown from smoke. These lenses do things to brilliant color that Nikkor's don't. Sometimes it works, like here  I was actually trying to capture the smoke bands in front of the sun... Regards, Doc Sharptail |

thats a great shot , we been having a half moon here the last few nights but no color - do you have wild fires up there currently ? thats generally when i see that kind of color |

One of the driest summers here so far. I don't remember one this hot since '63. There are serious fire problems to the west of us, and the westerly winds are bringing in a lot of smoke. I tried Saturday night to replicate the red sunset shot with nikkor, but no luck. It disappeared into cloud before it could redden. Will try again this week... Did get a brownish late evening sun with the Nikkor 200mm f4:  1/1600 sec at f11, ISO 400 with the fixed focal length 200 at hard infinity stop... Some chromatic aberrations on the outer edge of the sun, which is to be expected shooting directly into it. I had the built in lens hood fully extended. I tried a couple of shots shooting over a whitish concrete barrier at some pasture poodles. The lens flared quite noticeably, even with the shade extended. Very harsh lighting conditions. More to find out yet. I think in my normal escarpment habitat I'm going to be okay with most of my glass. Regards, Doc Sharptail |

i have been expeirencing the dry as well - little to no rain in a month - none insight , everything is turning brown and or wilting , crops are gone in a lot of areas and im heering that those that irrigate that still have good fields are being put on rations ...i did not know they did that till now , that red hue is indicative of the smoke from the wildfires , we are not getting much of that yet - we generally do from the west , but not so far this year , tonight that moon is approaching 3/4 and quite clear and white , spent the evening with friends at the gunclub on the patio tonight drinking beer and talking smart as folks my age do , a lot of discussion of the young trap shooters we work with - they will never know the lives we had , hope they enjoy theirs as much as we did ours , but part of the talk was all the things we enjoyed that they cannot today , perhaps they are not missing anything but we all feel they are , the state of the country is such that we suspect no one will ever know those things again , good talk good reflections and even tho i was 300 miles south in those days there were not much differences in our memories in the end , i sometimes wonder if the young will ever get to do what we did tonight in the future , or if they would appreciate it if they could , i guess time will tell |
