I am seriously impressed with this.
It got the best of Nikon's 70's coatings, and they were perfectly applied...

Being a flat-field formula, it naturally excels at this sort of thing.

Image

Image

Not too shabby on the bugs either.

Speaking of flowers  ;)

Nikkor 55 f3.5 micro wide open at f3.5, 1/125 sec. ISO 200
Full lens extension.

There ya go.
Japanese lady bug in highly agitated mood.
Bringing the lens up sure got it excited.
Blur at bug's rear is her wing-shells flexing in reaction to perceived threat :P

the closeups really let you know what they present to those that might prey on them - my foot is not discriminatingly however

I am getting a little better with this lens.
Still a bit of a bear hand-held, but do-able...

Image

I do need to use it at slightly lower ISO.
This was at 400 to minimize the stiff breeze effects we've been getting lately.

Image

Bronze War One soldier of the 44th Royal Dragoons Infantry at the Vimy Ridge memorial in the park that bears the same Vimy Ridge name.

I've had a couple of opportunities to replace this with a more modern improved non-flat field optical formula version, but both suffered from fungus on the lens elements.
I'll keep going with this flat field older p.c. version.

As an all-purpose lens, not bad. It tends to flare a bit more than an every-day 50mm f2, but there's always a trade off.

Doc Sharptail

As an all purpose "do everything" lens, not too bad.

Image

It doesn't have quite the depth of field of a 50mm f2 nikkor, but still entirely useable.
I have a similar image taken with the normal 50 that I'll show after the imgur site calms down a bit. Saturday afternoons tend to be busy band-width wise...

Image

Contrast and definition are very good for a lens of this type.

Image

I manipulated this one a bit in post. Lens fringes a bit on brilliant reds, which can over-take a scene. Fortunately enough, it doesn't occur at the macro settings the lens was primarily designed for. It tends to slight overexposure shooting towards the sun at the infinity mark. 1/160 sec f8, ISO 125.

Image

I like these wrought-iron lamp posts with the globe fixtures.

Image

It tends towards very slight chromatic aberrations in high key/high contrast scenes.
This was taken at the infinity mark. I think it's pushing the abilities of the lens a bit here. Apparently, the AI/s variant of this handles these situations a lot better. Tiny bit of flare just in front of Riel's feet. It needs a hood just as much as a normal 50mm does in cross-lighting.

Doc Sharptail

October 19, about noon.
I thought it was a Monarch flitting around at first.
Tiger moth's are alright, though.

55 micro at f 8, 1/20 sec hand held, ISO 100.
I got very lucky with this shot.
The D-200 tends to slight over-exposure with low contrast grey back-grounds.
Out of camera image, except for re-size.

Image

October 21 at sunset.
There was something wrong with this young Canada goose- probably clipped by a semi-truck up on the express-way. I don't normally close in this near~ about 2 1/2 - 3 feet.
I left it alone apart from a couple of photo's, and resumed my fishing. 20 minutes later, the goose was dead.

Micro 55 at f5.6, 1/125 sec at ISO 125.

Again, untouched except for re-size.
Nice for the partial shade conditions.
This lens is better on the micro side of things.

Image

October 22, mid afternoon.
The carnations are still opening up at this late date.
We had frost late evening on the 22nd, so frames like this are going to become extremely rare.
I popped up the flash for fill to minimize wind effects.
The camera keeps reverting back to it's default flash setting of 1/60 sec every time it's turned off, and I keep forgetting. Slight motion blur there that would be non-existent at 1/250 sec, which should be the default setting. It still worked, sort of....

1/60 sec at f8 at ISO 100 on the micro 55 with the flash on.
Straight out of camera except for re-size.

Regards,

Doc Sharptail

Back in the day, I marveled at how people could get up close & personal pics of geese. I figured it was a very long lens in use. I mean, you can't sneak up on a goose.

No - you get close up goose pics at the zoo or parks. (Well, DUH Steve!) Then I got a few and the urge was over. SW

I think this may be the sharpest lens in my battery.

Image

There's the full image, reduced to fit here.

Image

90-95% crop of image left.
Other than some slight barrel distortion, I can't find a whole lot wrong with this lens.
Definitely not one of the better days for imagery.
The heavy over-cast drove down contrast quite a bit.
I need to do a comparable test with the 50mm f2 nikkor.
That lens is a totally different rendering package though.
The flat field construction of the micro makes it sort of unique.
I am a bit surprised by the edge performance on it.
For a late 60's - early 70's design and build, not bad at all.
This use is not really what it was designed for, but I'll take it anyways.
The full frame camera is a much more realistic test bed than the DX/APSC that I was trying previously...

I am currently watching a more modern variant on the local buy/sell- it is an "improved" non flat field version...

Doc Sharptail

I had the same lens years ago on a Nikon FM that I took along on a bunch of my trips to the Rockies.
This one was an accident, was just zeroing in on the blossom in low light to see if I could get a shot when that fly came along and didn't get spooked by moving around. Snapped the pic unfortunately in a hurry before focusing on the eyeballs. Pretty sure the film was Ektachrome 200.
