Into the testing phase with this recently converted oldster.

Cross lighting test:

Stepped down 220-240V to underground distribution vault.
This type of lighting is a good test of a lens's abilities.
4:00 sun was at almost a perfect 90 degrees to the right of subject.
Note slightly green cast to sky.
About 120 yds. f8 at ISO 400 and 1/640 sec.
Shooting through a slightly smeary looking modern DHD U/V filter here.
I should really clean it, or get it exchanged. It's a brand new filter.

80% crop of frame above.
For all intents and purposes, this is a fairly sharp lens, especially considering the subject's distance. I was expecting to have to go to f11 for this degree of sharpness, but f8 is fine.

Deke owl at the now long-defunct Wholesale Sports.

Slightly tighter crop here bordering on 95%.
About 60 yards. Highlights are a bit washed out at f11 and 1/250 sec. Very slight motion blur here. I'll have to remember to stay above 1/250 sec with this lens.

A hefty crop of a quick wide-open at f4 shot.
About 25-30 feet away from the camera.
Direct sunlight on subject makes for great imagery.

It takes a bit of getting used to focusing this lens.
It's not quite as focus finicky as the newer A/I-s variant that I have, and I should end up with more usable images.
The only dis-convenience of this over it's much more modern counter part are it's bulk and weight.
I'll take the user friendliness over compact size and weight any day.
I'll hope-fully be putting it to good use once we get open water here again...

at one time I could follow what you posted, f stops and all,

have an old Nikon FM film camera I used to play with just a bit,
and a Nikon D5100 DSLR I bought maybe 10 yrs ago,
bought 2 extra lenses for it but never seem to get the time to use it much,

as I get time I'll look at the specs on the lenses (besides the generic-ish one that came with it standard, which is not shabby, ) and post up a few pics I have taken


nothing note worthy mind you, I end up using my cell phone for most stuff nowadays

I sold that lens off when the KEH camera circus was last here.
This is one of those rare instances where the semi-modern replacement out-performs the older lens.

One way to determine performance is to track a moving subject.
Geese and rabbits are good- white-tail deer even better.
It used to be done all the time, before auto-focus became common place.

Some of the current A/F lenses have superior optics, and produce great images.
They are not what I'm after though.
I actually started out with a modest stable of nikkor manual focus lenses, and have stuck with it, sometimes to the detriment of losing out on images.

The older glass mostly has rendering qualities (read slight aberrations here) that the modern computerized glass simply cannot match.

This probably doesn't make a whole lot of sense, in light of what's available today.
It does to me, and most of the used manual focus lenses available today are quite modest in price, especially compared to their automated modern a/f counter-parts.

There's even a website or 2 dedicated to this sort of thing.
mflenses.com is one, where I sometimes participate.
