Yesterday's Weapons Forums

I have been busy the last two or three weeks doing something a little different. We went to the farm and got my GG Grand mother's sideboard buffet. that had been sitting in several barn's and sheds the last 60 or 70 years. My GG Grandparents brought it to Texas with them in a covered wagon when they moved here in 1868. It was worse for wear. The neighbor and I desided to refinish it. Boy was it a job one of the barns it had sat in must have leaked. The thin veneer wood was cracked and peeling off. We desided to strip the veneer off as it was going to have to be replaced anyway. When we stripped it off boy were we surprised we found solid cherry wood under there. So we desided not to reveneer it and finish the cherry wood. I wish I had taken a before shot.It is still solid as a rock. They sure don't build stuff like they used to. This is a photo of how it turned out.

....do you realize the folks on "Antiques Road Show" would have a cow and say you should have left it as is because the dang thing was probably worth $250,000 and by refinishing it -you took the value down to $50...


....seriously though-I would've gotten a hold of someone knowledgable and reputable in the field and had them give it a professionable look over before doing anything to it....just my .02

We started to have a professional restore done on it, but after seeing all that nice cherry lumber it was made out of we desided to keep the cherry lumber look. It really does not make a lot of sence to me some of the things the old furniture makers did making this stuff they started out with good cherry wood with great grain and then they covered it up with veneer and lots of black mohogony stain.

gotta remember that the old finishes darkened with time ,

and you are lucky , my grandmother and her mother beleived that 'spring cleaning' meant a fresh coat of paint on everything - whether it needed it or not ,
