Did you know a .410 brush will go down a .38 cal Plainsman barrel?

Did you also know it won't come out?

Damned thing just pulled out of the cleaning rod threads, and went just enough off centre that I can't thread it back on (if I could I would have coated the threads of the rod with JB Stick and threaded it onto the brush. Then when the JB set I could pull it all out).

SO... is there something that will dissolve the brass parts of the brush without damaging the barrel?

OR ... can I unscrew the breech plug from the barrel so I can push the whole mess all the way through?

I've looked at it carefully and can't see any sign that it has been pinned, but I don't want to really reef on it until I know that it should come apart. (Like maybe it has been silver soldered? Oh I hope not)

It also looks to me as if there is an irregular cavity behind the flash hole, where old powder residue collects, so I want to remove that plug anyway.

The Pedersoli site is no help in finding a barrel/action wrench specific to the Plainsman. It is a hex barrel so if I can find a 13/16ths hex wrench I may be able to wiggle it up over the tang onto the barrel. Is there action such a thing as an adjustable barrel/action wrench? (They seem to called Action wrenches, but with a muzzle-loader there is no "Action" per se, so barrel wrench seems a better name in this case.)

The wires of the brush are angled so they dig into the barrel. You might try copper solvent as brass has copper in it. If the barrel is exactly 13/16 you should be able to use any wrench of that size and they are available. There is also metric wrenches close in size if not 13/16ths.

Never put an oversized brush in a dead end barrel.

If you rotated the brush it may have came out while turning.

I don't think you will be able to slide the case over the brush with the wires angled as they are. But you will never know till you try.

Dumb idea of the day... trickle some powder into the flash hole and blow it out. I've done that with patches that came off the rod. SW

I thought of the powder-through-the-flash-hole idea and put it on the "if nothing else works" shelf.

I glued a cut off section of a .32-40 case to a 3/8" dowel, pressed some JB Stick in the cavity, sent it down the muzzle onto the threads of the brush and let it set. Years ago I bought a tiny little 5-to-1 and never found a use for it until now. I tied the barrel and the 5-to-1 to the rafters (so I could get a straight pull), tied a knot that bears some faint resemblance to a Prussic knot onto the dowel and then was able to pull it out! :D

Powder thru the flash hole won't blow up the gun, but you will need alot more than the amount needed to cough out a patch. I have coughed balls out that were loaded sans powder.
You may also want to try a bullet puller with a much longer screw. It may bite and ruin enough bristles that the hold is weakened.

That is why I like my Encore with the removable plug. You can run the brush through like a bolt gun.
