.430, .451, .454 Any more?
My new "Unknown Spanish" flintlock came with no info. .430 just falls down the barrel. .451 and .454 sit on the barrel.

But .451 will go in with just thumb pressure and once started will go all the way down with moderate pressure on the ramrod. But try to patch it and it is really tight. I haven't had the nerve to see if it will actually work with the patch. I'm afraid it will get so far and then just stop.

I've been trying it with 40gr of 3F, a wonderwad pushed all the way down on top of the powder, then the ball and that seems to work, after a fashion (see also my post about hanging up on the half cock notch). Is there a .450 or .449 ball that presumably would work with a patch?

The capper kaintuck made for me is Spanish. Barrel sez "44 cal". I use .445 with a pre- greased patch & it does all right. Same for my Pedersoli flintgrinder 44. SW

451 balls ARE the correct size for a .44 caliber black powder pistol. If you have a revolver, you put the powder in first then seat the balls in the cylinder. They will be tight.Then, you put bullet lube over all the bullets after you have seated them in the cylinder. You don't use patches on pistols. You use the bullet lube instead. If you are using Goex powder, use FFFg. The maximum load is 30 grains.
