i picked up an uberti cowboy version of the 1873 winchester tonight , i got this because it is the true rifle of the old west that SASS represents , they accept others within a range but its the famous rifle that won the west , i bought the steel receiver in case hardened finish , plain[no checker] stock , octagon 20" bbl in blued finish , it came with a very nice looking set of furniture in a reddish walnut finish , extremely well fit and a blued crescent buttplate , i will try to get a photo up when light allows , everything i own is in 45 colt except the 22cal buckaroo stuff , i am very happy with this rifle , i know there are other mfgrs of the era but i grew up seeing this ,

i started shooting SASS with a rossi version of the winchester 1892 and still shoot that regularly , its an excellent rifle , it shoots well and i love this rifle , it has been used and abused and keeps on running fine , its a 20" octagon blued barrel with a color case hardened finish on the receiver , it has the blued crescent buttplate and nice looking brown walnut furniture , i look at this as the last of the cowboy series of these repeating rifles ,

i bought an uberti version of the 1860 henry rifle last year , its what i would consider the first in the series of cowboy repeating rifles , its drawback is that its longer because of the front tube loading system , with its follower that can be a challenge to not restrict as you shoot and the lack of a forearm stock , its brass frame and blued 24" octagon barrel [the front 4" is the loading swivel system] have that look tho , the brass crescent buttplate has the military cleaning kit trap and it came with sling attachments on the left side of the barrel and buttstock because these originally were military models for the civil war ,

and last but not least , i ordered tonight , a winchester/henry 1866 , its the transition between the 1860 and the 1873 , it has the brass frame of the 1860 but the loading port and forearm of the 1873 , its in the same octagon 20" blued barrel , it has the crescent butplate but ill have to tell you if its steel or brass when i get it as with the furniture finish , ill guess it will match the 73 ,

dont ask me why i needed that ...i just did ,
part of my thinking was that i have two sets of everything , my main set and a backup , im trying to get my son to try this , and eventually the grandkids , i have all the buckaroos in duplicate as well , the rifles were to offer him an option , thats my story and im sticking to it ...yup ...thats the explanation ,

i have also thought to build a gunrack for the rifles like you see in every movie in the jail , ill have one of each vintage

I have been buying 20" barrels for my Encore as they are easier to manover inside a box blind.

ive found that also - in terms of this old curmudgeon being able to swing on target and operate the lever as quickly as i can , that added length is a bit of a hinderance , i do like the look of the 24" but im pleased with both the look and performance of the 20" ,

my shooting is not competitive anymore really , im in it for the fun , but i like to at least be in the bottom half or at worst third , as a silver senior it makes me happy to get to shoot and im glad i dont have to run against the young guns these days , now to work off the cost of buying both in such close proximity , in the past i tried to space them a year apart but time is closing in - i want to enjoy these before im too old
