There is a local guy here thinning his collection a bit. I have a chance to get a original Springfield 45-70 trapdoor rifle. They are all original rifles and appear in good shape, good wood and bores and are tight and and in good working order. He is wanting $600.00-$800.00 a rifle they range from 1873-1884. Is this a good price and are there any certain things I should look for in selecting a trapdoor rifle. all comment and opinions would be appreciated.

ive seen them from 600-1400 and i envey you , i want one of these in the worst way - but need to sell a krag to get it at this point , i cant help more than that but if you need it i can give you a link or to for research data

Obviously condition is an important factor. Look for the cleanest chamber & rifling. If for collecting look for over zealous cleaning, rebluing etc. Check the stock for cartouches. Pretty much norm for milsurps. I am no authority in these so can't tell you which is more colectible but I think the 1884 had an experimental ramrod bayonet ?

in looking i think its the M1888 that is rod bayonet - carried to the M1900 and M1903 , then back to the blade

I have an 1888 but I thought there was an experimental RR bayo on some of the 84's? But again I am no expert
