A long time ago I was thinking of buying a small BP repo revolver in a 30 something caliber. I now know that some places make a cylinder that fits the BP pistol that you can use a standard cartridge.

Has anyone tried this and if so what would be the smallest caliber I could do this with? My idea is to set one up that works well and have it engraved and present it to my father.

Although dad does not believe in a gun for protection this would make it a bit easier to load if need be and he could display it in a case with the other old BP pistols I have given him.

32 s&w short is the smallest they make for the 1849 colt pocket
but you might as well give him a cased pea-shooter.

Thanks for the info. the 32 short might be two small but I don't want him to have a full size like my 44 BP Navy. I think he will like th pocket pistol size.

It looks like you can just by swapping out to the old BP cylinder.

There is more to that than a cylinder. The hammer has to be changed to indent a primer, rather than crush a cap nestled over a nipple. Plus it usually needs a recoil sheild or the shells wiggle out and cause a jam in the cylinder. Especially on the right side. There is usually no gate to load/ unload, so you have to remove cylinder,load, then re-install. When finished you have a whimp revolver.

I have a Remington 1871 factory conversion of their .31 pocket revolver here. It belongs to a friend who found it when handling his father in law's estate. The wife didn't like guns in the house even her own father's guns so he brought them here for safe keeping and to ask me to find out its value.

There are similar conversion kits for the Remington pocket revolver reproductions.
Its very simple , a cylinder chambered for a .32 cartridge, rimfire in the case of this original, and S&W short centerfire in the case of the repro kits.
A recoil shield slips over the end of the cylinder with notches for the hammer nose to hit the rims.
The C&B rammer is retained and a percussion cylinder could probably be used if no ammo were available, and .32 rimfire is near non existent these days.
Aside from some wear to the hammer nose from someone dry firing it the original looks serviceable and complete with most of its original finish showing now that I cleaned the worst of the crud off it.
Haven't examined the repros yet.
