I have several cap and ball revolvers, the Navy type, or the Remington types. I have owned others too, like the Walker. I have always used Black Powder, but as most shooters of BP know, it is getting hard to find places that stock it. Yep it's smokey, it's dirty, and it builds a residue fast. In my hunt for alternative powders, Pyrodex works, but is grainy and a little hard to ignite at times. I recently have tried the American Pioneer powder. It really leaves little residue. It is less messy, smokes somewhat, although not as much as BP. I don't think I could see a difference in performance but when it came to reloading the pistol, there was no build-up of residue. It makes cleaning the gun so much easier and it does not have the foul sulfur smell BP and Pyrodex leaves. If any of you are shooting cap and ball pistols buy a pound and give it a try. You basically use the same 'volume' loading as you do BP. ( I used to pride myself on using BP because that was the old way. I found myself shying away from using the pistols since they created such a mess. The use of this new powder dos not leave that mess and the old way is not as important anymore)

I've had good results with Pyrodex. Do not use shokeys gold!!! I bought a pound & it's too darn fine. I tried some in cartridges & it clung badly to the funnel. Accuracy results were inconsistent, too.

I feel it would cause a chain fire sooner rather than later. SW

Pyrodex is still dirty and smell though. It is cleaner than BP, but much, much dirtier than the American Pioneer. It leaves your barrel and chamber like you were shooting cartridges.

I may be entering this discusion a little late, but anyway I just used Tripple Seven in my Ruger Blackhawk and I tried 30grns and a 250grn pellet at about 850fps then I got gutsy and tried 40grns compressed 250grn pellet again in my Ruger Blackhawk because it has a stronger Frame than reproduction Colts. and with no signs of high pressure in my Ruger I got repeted results of 1135fps. and in my Marlin, I got 1340fps. I am not recemending anyone to do this who is not useing a firearm that can't handle High Pressures..... again it is stronger than Winchester and colt reprductions.I got no signs of high pressures I was trying to aproach higher velocities closer to a Magnum load....

I use it in my 1858 Rem also, sometimes I just jump and not tell the hole story,,,,, Im sorry for not being clear, I was reading about one of the message's about Tripple Seven not liking to be compressed, and it does say that on loading info. but I compressed it alot in my 45 long colt Ruger Blackhawk. and in my 1895 Marlin. with very good results in getting much higher velocities, and a lot more recoil. I have also been loading it in 7.62x54r Russian 60grns compressed and my 8x50r Steyr, same load.
