Years and I mean years ago Numrich sold a kit to convert your 30-30 carbines to 44 Mag. I jumped on one and still after all the tinkering cannot get it to draw up the next shell and chamber it. I can hand feed it with no problems and it extracts well.

Did any one here buy one of these and by chance have the instructions? When I contacted Numrich they said they did not have any instructions. Any one have an idea?

For starters, the geometry is all wrong. Marlin made the 336 in 44 mag for a short time but dropped it due to feeding problems. With the 30-30 length receiver, there's just too much room for the cartridge to mis align.

I believe the critical part is the lifter... bullet shape would have a lot to do with things, too. How fast you work the lever... a lot of things to consider.

I think it could be made to work, but you would have a lot of cut & try file work ahead of you.

Wrenchester also chambered their 30-30 length rifle ( model 94) for 44 mag and also discontinued it.

I still think it can be made to work, but it will be quite a geometry problem getting all the angles just right.

Just the project for the long, cold winter to come. SW

There was nothing inherently wrong with the wins that wasn't wrong with the marlins. Both worked if minded your Ps & Qs.

My closest friend had a win 1894 magnum ( 44 mag) and it shot well enough... until he tried to feed it that caliber & Lyman 429421 with Keith's pet load. Rifle handled the load okay, but it flat wouldn't feed.

The marlin 336 & win 94 were both discontinued in 44 mag... not sure about the win trapper model - it might have been in the catalog when win folded up.

I've shot deer with my marlin 1894 44 mag, but anymore if I want to shoot a 44 caliber lever action, I reach for my 444P. I should actually sell my 1894 as I have not shot it for many years.

The very best 44 mag rifle I've had was a Rem 788. Man, what a tack driver! A collector wanted it worse than me & I no longer have it. It had the same problem as the 788 in 30-30 I used to have = a crappy extractor. I have never cared much for Rem extractors.

Bottom line? The various lever action 44 mags can be made to function reliably; it just takes experimentation. I hear the Rossi pumas are a quality rifle.

I think Mark's issue is resolvable with some judicious file work. SW
