If properly stored indefinitely. I occasionally shoot ammo from the 70's and it's fine. If storage is poor, you will end up with a lot of duds.

agree with M14man - ive shot some from the very early 60s with no problem at all , if they werent loose rounds id have saved them - unfortunately no intact boxes - but stored in a closet /top shelf/conditioned house and look like the day they were bought [except they are loose in a shoe box

I've had old .22 ammo work just fine. Don't know how old sometimes, I often buy at estate sales and wind up with loose ammo in the bottom of a box of other stuff. If it has no visible problems, I shoot it up in a S&W revolver I use mostly just for plinking.

The bargain priced ammo, even newly manufactured, has given me more trouble than the old ammo. Remington Thunderbolt, if I remember correctly. It seems to have considerable velocity variation from shot to shot. If someone comes across some of that ammo in years to come, they likely will attribute the shortcomings they notice to age, when actually it was made that way.

steve499 , ive had that problem with that ammo as well , wont run my ceinar conversion , and lots of variation , even a few FTF , im not likeing it at all - not buying anymore of that , ill pay a little more

I bought a brick of winchester wildcat some years ago and a couple of years ago was the first time that I had any fail to fire. It worked good till lately. Was digging through my old gun cabinet and found a brick of remimgton that I had forgotten about. Will check them out when the weather gets nice.

I've got some Winchester that I bought in Calif. well over 20 years ago and so far they have held up well. I think dry storage is important for these.

For awhile there was talk of ammo manufacturers using a primer formula which would begin to go dud after ten years regardless of storage.
This was supposed to be some sort of stealth disarming program, conspiracy theory perhaps but they seemed to have found reason to believe that the short lived primer mixture was being sold at that time, mid 70's I think it was.

Interestingly in a test of US military handguns some years back .38 long Colt Navy ammo loaded nearly a century ago was found to be reliable and accurate. The original issue converted Colt 1861 navy it was fired in was the most accurate of the guns tested.

Remember that early 20th century .22 ammo is highly corrosive, thats why some of the cheaper boys rifles had Brass barrel liners.
