This rifle came to me as a rescue in a horstrade at the LGS. It was D&T'd, original rear sight block ground down, a nice job on the turned down bolt handle and a civilian safety lever. The original handguard was scalloped out to accommodate a large diameter scope, which I have since replaced. The Lyman was attached after the owner removed the scope, it shoots well and I like peep sights anyway.
My thought is to replace the missing metal for the rear sight block, to allow an appropriate dovetail base to be mounted. That would match up to a Redfield Jr base, of course a set of Weaver rings and an old K4 or 6 scope. It would be clone for my own enjoyment.
I queried this on the CMP Forum, they thought I was nuts even though they had high praise for a guy who reworks deactivated drill rifles ( welded shut).

None of the work you see was done by me, just hate to see the milsurps carved up like this. But since it was done and can't be reversed, I'd like to take it a step further and make an A4 sniper clone for my own enjoyment----------it's so close anyway.. The funny thing is the recesses of the stock and the action was still full of cosmoline when the other owner had a scope put on. I finally shot the rifle over Turkey Day weekend, functioned well but need to adjust the micrometer sights.
