I picked up a Custer Era Carbine in the 19,6XX range a few years ago. All original, but had the 1879 replacement stock. Supposedly, the early stocks with the long grip had a tendancy to break, plus as we have read; the lack of a cleaning rod did not allow the soldiers to knock a stuck case from the chamber. The 1879 stocks were stronger and had a trapdoor in the butt plate to store a 3 piece rod.

Very nice looking carbine! :D

Just make sure when you load for it, you use CARBINE load data as they didn't use full power cartridges. Your shoulder will thank you! :P

Due to the value, it won't be shot much. I did a 3 round test when I first got it. In that this old wood is 125 years old, only whimp rounds would be fired to prevent wood split. It would ruin my day to split it. I have another 'cutdown' type I use if I want to go the 'carbine' route. Yes the carbines used a 405 grain bullet with 55 grains of black instead of the 500-70g.

Very nice rifle Mick with a fantastic history attached to it.
It's not my main field of interest, but I love to read and learn about them.

Met vriendelijke groet,

Martin

A Trapdoor with a Trapdoor.....Yaaaaa......

Them old smokin'BP cartridge Rifles/Carbines sure do grow on you...

Custer also left behind his Gattling guns.
I think the problem with cartriges was the high copper content....maby read that somewhere.

When I was about 12 or 13, Mom worked a while at Crow Agentcy and we spent quite a few days arond the area, so Of course, we checked out Custers Battlefeild, and read alot on his demise....... and fished the Big Horn and Little Big Horn Rivers. The Little Bighorn is more like a small canal, but I did catch a BIG Brown Trout there, one 4th of July...

Coolest of Guns, and NICE condition!
