About 30 years ago a deputy sheriff here called me and said the local pawnshop had an 03-A3 for $125, and it was in good shape. I told him I'd take it, and be there in 5 minutes. Got there and paid for it. But it was not an 03-A3, but a Springfield 03 - barrel date 11-20. The metal was very good, but the wood had been slathered with orange varnish. However, Bubba did not sand the stock down. A couple of years ago spent about a week stripping it down with citristrip, and then finished it with Watco Danish Oil finish. I did not use any sandpaper, but did use a Scotch-Brite sponge on it. It all worked out well; the inspector's marks and stamps are still good.
