Bore needs a lot of work on this one yet - but it's the only Krag I have at this point... I'm hoping to bring it back to respectable:

I am working on a 1895 Krag Carbine (Model 1896). I found it at a local shop as part of an estate sale. When I get it finished, I'll post the pictures.

If you ever want to toss the stock out let me know! I have one with a great bore that got painted (which protected it) and an attempt at a sporter job.

The other one is now one of Don's projects.

Another possibility would be a broken stock with fore end intact to act as a donor. A fore end could be spliced in the manner of the duffle cut bring backs, though a join like the Finn Nagant rebuilds would be best for strudyness. As long as the join is under the lower band it would look fine.

From what I hear the Krag stocks were weakest at the magazine cut outs. Probably most that broke are broken there so some with intact fore ends might be floating around some gunsmith's junk room.

I can't be sure if my Carbine was an original, or much more likely the sporter version, since most of the early sporters used the original fore sight remounted to the cut down barrels.
I don't remember the rifle in enough detail to spot any anomalies.

I've also seen similar cut down Krags in WW2 photos, the photo showed a radio team moving a large radio through swampland . The explanation was that these were issued for use by US troops stationed in Panama to guard the region around the canal. A similar cut down 03 Springfield was also in use in some out of the way places, one photo shows mule drivers armed with these. They were an early form of Jungle Carbine, made using otherwise obsolete arms. There was probably a large supply of .30/40 ammo still in storage in those areas of operation.

I had one of those long rifles that had the worst bore that I have ever seen. The chamber was so far gone, that when it was fired, it elongated the 30/40 case . This was due to the front of the chamber being totally rusted away.

I replaced the barrel with one of the new Gun Parts Inc. bore and its a real tack driver now.

You guys are making me cry. I have found a few doners out there but they alone were pricey. The bore on this on this one is so shiny and nice that I figure I'll buy a really bad one and swap. The other need to get a doner is due to the missing front bands.

A Square see Don about the over under I sent it to him.

Don't let him get anything for it. I sent it to him free incl shipping. He did say he had some Jap stuff incl a bayonet to trade but that never happened and it was not expected. I have no problems giving things to you fellow board members.

He's dumped a bit of $ into it since. Still hasn't found the trigger guard yet.....or at least since he stopped talking to me in August.

Fingolfen,

What about the pictured rifle isn't respectable???

I should have kept it but it's not a Milsurp so I was not going to spend the time working on it.
