Lucked out at the auctions this weekend (I hope). Got an 03A3 and a 1917. Unfortunately, only one pic each and very spare descriptions http://www.proxibid.com/asp/LotDetail.a ... 595&aiid=0 http://www.proxibid.com/asp/LotDetail.a ... 371&aiid=0 Price seemed good, but never know about these things till the big brown truck arrives. |

The 03A3 and the 1917 arrived. The A3 is in great shape-seems pretty original, EXCEPT--they weren't kidding when they said that the stock had been refinished. It is a very nice refinish job, but they worked the cartouches over pretty hard--very faint now. The metal is in great shape, barrel dated 1-43 with a receiver that was made that same month and year. Barrel measures a "1" on the CMP muzzle gauge. All the parts I can see are marked "R" except the bolt , which is marked "N. S." on the top. I'll post some pics of the 1917 tomorrow |

Thanks, square 10. The 1917 is not bad, but a REAL mixmaster--Eddystone receiver and stock, Remington barrel and Winchester bolt. All of the small parts are Eddystone. Barrel is just a smidge under "2" on the CMP muzzle gauge and passes the Field gauge test. Parts look like they are still blued |

these are notorious for mixing of parts - the US required interchangeability , its still in military format thats a big plus to start , if the bbl is good [many arent] it should shoot well and please you , these actions are super , i think it looks great |

Thanks. I'm not sure whether "2" on the CMP gauge is good or not. Been told that anything less than "3" is not too bad. I'll give a range report when i shoot it |

well - i dont measure mine when they are 90 years old , i think these old girls have every right to be what they are [fooled ya - thought i might post a blue remark -right ?] seriously , this is a WWI rifle , it has every right to be less than factory fresh , these were heavily used , and passed around amoung our allies , it got USED and it deserves a good home , its not so often that you can find a pristene rifle , produced in wartime , that didnt get used some , given that these were an xcelent action , prised for caliber conversions as well as deer rifles , its a wonder we have so many , these are a particularly interesting rifle to me |

I agree. My son and I shoot in a military silhouette match where military rifles of at least 50 years of age, "as issued", are used to shoot metal silhouettes of chickens , pigs, turkeys and rams at distances of 200 to 500 meters. We have been using Swiss rifles , but might have to try this one at the next match. I did find this cartouche on the left side of the 1917 |

thats thought to be a rebuild marking , they dont know its true meaning , lots of speculation , the M1917 left the factory without a cartouche , it did have the bold letter in the muzzle end[R-W-E] to signify the factory , and the numerous inspector marks [EAGLES HEAD & #] generaly on the wrist and around the trigger guard , the canadians stamped a "C"arrow property mark , new zealand a "N"arrow"Z" and britain a broad arrow and they were often painted with a band of red to signify the non-standard cartrige , unit marks were stamped by these as well as the danes left side cartouches indicate rebuilds - probably when the remington bbl got put on it |
