I have a 2-44 date SA with welded up receiver and like new SA barrel dated 6-43. It gages as nearly new at both ends. Living close to the CMP North Store, i can visit often and look for an appropriate date barreled receiver. Their barrels are for the most part worn out.

My question for you is this: Should I purchase the barrel and receiver vises and change out the barrels myself, or find a competent armorer to do this?

I promise to hold my 'deer in the headlights' stare while i await your replies...

Regards,

Richard

Thanks,

Head space might be the big issue. Would be easier to do yourself if you had a short chambered barrel & a reamer. If I had the choice I would find a competent smith.

I found a competent armorer. Roland Beaver rebuilds, accurizes and builds match grade Garands from customer submitted rifles.

Wednesday, went over to the CMP North Store and picked out a barreled receiver to send along with the remainder of the welded up M1. There were a few decent receivers, but most were pretty rough. They had the original barrels, some from before the US entry into WWII. All the bores were long gone.

Roland agreed to install a Douglas barrel, which he cuts down from a blank. After he cuts the remaining part of the short chamber, he removes the barrel and polishes the chamber.

He advised me to sell the period SA-3 uncut op rod and find a newer one to use.

Roland Beaver lives in Arkansas. He is a retired Marine armorer and works full time in his own business. If anyone wants his contact information, please PM me.

I'm going to the OGCA meeting in Wilmington, Ohio tomorrow morning. Should be able to fill a shopping list there.

There are many things I like about the CMP, mostly that they are there to offer a legitimate service in a friendly manner, which they do quite well. Of course i also like the rows upon rows of 03s, 03-A3s, Winchester, H&R, SA Garands, M1 Carbines... It's like Christmas all over.
