Hi,

Last Saturday, I picked up an M1 barrel dated 6-43 at the Lima, Ohio show. I did not have any gauges with me. The seller claimed it had an ME of 1.5 - 2.0. The bore looked pretty dark. WTH, I bought it any way. The Parkerized finish seemed not to have anything beyond some shelf wear.

When I got it home, the first thing I did was to get my gauge and check it. 0.0! Next was to run a clean patch through it and look through it again. Other than the lint shoved out of it, it is like brand new! Even the TE is like new.

It could be a reject for some reason, or a replacement that someone picked up when the Government released a lot of this stuff. I don't see any evidence that it was ever on a receiver.

Where can I find a receiver for it with numbers between 1,629,566 - 1,710,011? The last trip to the CMP showed some pretty beat up and rusted out receivers.

This morning I went over to the CMP at Camp Perry. Very few remaining barreled receivers, none very good. Lots of Winchesters re-barreled in the '50s and minus stocks, and several racks of field grade Winchesters. Many more field grade Springfields, and two racks of field grade H&Rs. The really nice service grade and correct grade rifles were nowhere to be seen.

I was about to check out when the thought occurred that some of those Springfields might be rebarreled early receivers. Yep, they were going all the way back to early six digits and there was one with five digits. I found three within the serial range of the new SA barrel and bought the best one. The stock might fit inside someone's fireplace.

Next, stopped by a nearby armorer's shop (Mid County Firearms) to show him what I had and ask for his thoughts. Soon after, one of the fellows from the CMP stopped in, saw what I had and called me back in the shop. There he swapped out the barrels, gauged everything and handed the rifle back to me. Fifteen minutes flat.

Now I am searching for a mid '43 stock SA GHS with the crossed cannons. This might be where my luck runs out.

Oooops! That rifle takes a McFarland stock 'S.A. EMcF' Same surely applies to the luck thing.
