I once had a Garand that appeared to be much lighter in weight than any other I've handled. (sound you hear is me kicking my own butt for parting with for the thousandth time) Seems to me that I'd read that later production Garand receivers had a hair more mass to them. The Garand I had was probably an early WW2 production Springfield (IIRC), perhaps prewar.
I've been considering building a Garand, not any time soon, but in the forseeable future. I'm looking into options. I'd like to build one that would be as light as possible while remaining correct as far as parts go. I'm not going to try to get exactly the same original parts, that would likely be too expensive. I just figure on obtaining a usable reciever (GI if possible) and picking up the other parts a bit at a time, some would be surplus GI ,and others like the barrel would be new production.
I saw some rusty barreled receivers on the CMP site dirt cheap, no garantee these are fit for a rebuild though. If I find a receiver thats basically sound but has a few minor problems like a worn track any suggestions on a Smith that can do any necessary welding and macining back to spec?
