Here's one that has seen better days (at least the stock has) I know very little about these but it was free and hopefully some one has a stock and the other parts I'll need for the rebuild.

Hey I just noticed I was the first post here!!

welcome ! you need to shrink your daughter's pic down quite a bit!

Is the krag a carbine? Or is it a cut down LR?

Its still a long rifle and the correct front sight is still present. The stock was the only thing that was cut down. So I'm only missing the front band/bayonet lug a few screws and the stock!

I did not know that a free rifle could be ugly. I have paid a lot more than what you did for uglier rifles. I am sure you will have it looking good in no time.
Do you know where to find a stock and a front band? My brother bought a rifle a while ago with a stock that looks like yours.

Dave

There are 3 stocks on fleabay right now that are from 100.00 to 240.00 so they are out there, but I'm a man with patience (most of the time) but there is alot of work with this one, it has been coated with a paint or dark coating over all the outside metal which saved it. The bolt is still smooth and the bore looks good also.

I was given one that was really a basket case. I thought seriously about putting it to rights but figured it would cost about $350 to do so and it would still have a crappy bore. I parted it out on ebay and made over $550 on it.

Great American Gunstock Co. has stocks for around 130 with handguard.
Bands shouldn't be too difficult to find. You can have that back in trim in no time :D

I'll check the stock archives and I'll check the company Bruce is suggesting. I want to put it back as a military rifle.

If the sights were gone I would do something else with it but I'll give it a good try. Does any one know if they were a deep blue, dark park or what?

Thanks

deep black-blue , SA didnt park their rifles till 1918 , cant see the muzzle end-front sight , but if its still full length and the original sight post you got a winner there , may take a little looking but its doable , the bbl should be 30" , and the front soight is fixed to the top of the bbl without any ring[not like the m1903] those that were shortened were refitted with 03 type front sights

I think so, the bore is very nice and all the internals are clean and still a bit oily. If I could find some ammo for it I'll give it a try.

should be available without a problem , should also be a good shooter , these were prised as hunting rifles , it will have one of the smoothest bolts you have ever tried ,

there is a site that does a great job of showing in photos the bolt removal - reassembly which is a bit tricky with these , and be very carefull around that loading gate that ifs the fragile area of these rifles
