while we talk about Mosins I don't know how I never noticed this, but my M38 has no bayonet fixture, or Cleaning rod(and no place on the front to put the cleaning rod like the other mosins). The front resembles the M1907, but it is not a 1907 It is an M1938 and says so on the top of the receiver. The date is 1928 has the USSR Izhesvk symbol9 wreath around hammer and cycle near top front of receiver Have no idea what variant this might be.
Definitely Soviet as far as I can see Not another country. numbers match
I will have pics next week when I post thepics of my 91/30 Any thought on this gun meanwhile

1928?

Hold on Pete The old Sarge here has to learn how to pay attention to detail
The M38 is just that On closer inspection the groove for the rod is there, as well as the small hole at the bottom of the upper hand guard. OK folks relax but thanks anyhow. For a while there I was beginning to think I had some kind of one of a kind mutant variant here, but it is just an old M38 without the cleaning rod I'll send pics of her and the 91/30 as soon as I take them and get them developed. Thanks again for being there for me

Yeah, it's a laminated stock that I just refinished. That is the after picture.

can you post pic's of the muzzle area? there is also a model 91/38 that was made with an m44 bayonet, then the bayonet portion was milled off. with a date of 1928, that sounds like what you have there. it's not a 91/59 because they have 91/30 rear sights with the range markings above 1000m milled off. the one you have has the shorter sight.
91/38's are more uncommon than the m38 and bring higher prices. I can't remember having ever seen one in person.
y'all have a good day, Keith
