just bought an awesome rust free 1939 tula and after what must have been 3 hours of punching the barrel with a .308 brush and hundreds of patches, the barrel is just as dirty as when I started.

Tips one how/what to use?

You just may have to fire it to see if that helps.

Can you post pics of the barrel? I had a mauser with a black barrel that I never could get clean, I had to replace the barrel. I would try patches soaked with hot water, that might cut it. I tried those ammonia based cleaners and they didnt work, they seemed to make it look worse. There are others here with more experience than I though. They might chime in with ideas. Mosins sure are fun to shoot!! Good luck!!

Had a 1914 dated Enfield that looked like a sewer pipe after what seemed like days of scrubbing and patch-work. Took it to the range, put a few rounds thru 'er and was shiny as could be after I cleaned it when I got home

Thanks everyone. I will give shooting and cleaning a go when this snow goes away. I tried to do a photo but was having a hard time with it for some reason, I'll try to again soon.

....some just never come clean no matter how much you shoot or clean...next day-STILL dirty patches.....but,no rust...and they shoot great...I dont worry if its not a mirror bore...
